Hampstead Theatre 2009
The club was unanimously in favour of lending drums to the Hampstead Theatre's production "Observe the Sons of Ulster Marching Towards the Somme" in June. The central theme of the play "Eight Ulster men volunteer at the beginning of the First World War. Whilst their bonds of friendship grow amidst the horror and despair of the trenches, the march towards their seemingly inevitable sacrifice continues apace. Ahead of them lies the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916." The play was written by award-winning Irish playwright and poet Frank McGuinness.
The memory of the sacrifices of the 36th Ulster Division (indeed along with other Irish regiments) is deeply revered, and we were honoured to be able to assist (in a small way) with the staging of this production.
Members of the club would like to extend thanks for the invitation and hospitality kindly shown when we visited one of the evening productions and had the great pleasure of meeting with the cast.
